Throughout October, members of the Bay District Volunteer Fire Department (BDVFD) have been visiting local schools, childcare centers, and community organizations as part of the department's annual Fire Prevention Month activities. The outreach efforts provide an opportunity to educate children and families about fire safety, promote prevention awareness, and strengthen relationships with the community the department serves.

As of October 26, department members have participated in 19 fire prevention and community outreach events during the month, reaching approximately 3,030 community members and contributing more than 183 volunteer personnel-hours to these activities.

Fire Prevention Month is an important part of the department's commitment to public education. While responding to emergencies remains a primary responsibility, teaching residents how to prevent fires and respond safely during an emergency is equally important.

Bringing Fire Safety Education into the Community

Throughout the month, firefighters visited numerous educational facilities, including Town Creek Elementary School, Green Holly Elementary School, Park Hall Elementary School, Greenview Knolls, and George Washington Carver Elementary School.

Members also connected with younger children through visits to Lexington Park Baptist Preschool, Bay Montessori, Honey MacCallum Preschool, Little Sunbeams Christian Preschool, Creative Beginnings, Foundations Early Learning Center, Seven Gables Academy, and several local childcare facilities.

These visits help introduce children to firefighters in a positive, welcoming environment while reinforcing important fire safety lessons. They also provide opportunities for young students to become familiar with the fire service and understand the importance of knowing what to do in an emergency.

In addition to school visits, department members participated in the Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen's Association Antique Apparatus event on October 18, continuing their involvement in activities that bring the fire service and community together.

A Commitment Made Possible by Volunteers

The department's Fire Prevention Month activities represent a significant commitment from its volunteer membership. In addition to regular emergency response duties, training, equipment maintenance, and other department responsibilities, members dedicated their time to attending educational visits and community events throughout the month.

The impact of these efforts extends beyond the number of people reached. Every school visit and community interaction provides an opportunity to build trust, encourage fire-safe habits, and help children feel more comfortable around firefighters.

The department's community outreach efforts are not limited to October. Throughout 2026, Bay District members have participated in career days, scouting activities, neighborhood celebrations, National Night Out, and other events that allow residents to interact with their local volunteer firefighters.

Continuing Through the End of October

The department's outreach calendar also includes upcoming Halloween activities, with members scheduled to participate in the Personalized Therapy Trunk or Treat on October 30, the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum Trunk or Treat on October 31, and the department's Safe Candy Giveaway on October 31.

These activities provide additional opportunities to connect with families and promote safety as the community celebrates Halloween.

Thank You to Our Community and Volunteers

The Bay District Volunteer Fire Department extends its appreciation to the schools, childcare providers, community organizations, teachers, administrators, and families who welcomed department members throughout Fire Prevention Month.

A special thank-you goes to the volunteer firefighters who took time from their personal schedules to support these important educational and community outreach activities. Their participation demonstrates the department's continued commitment to serving the community both during emergencies and through prevention education.

As Fire Prevention Month comes to a close, BDVFD encourages every household to test its smoke alarms, practice a home fire escape plan, and make sure everyone knows two ways out of each room when possible. Fire prevention begins with education, preparation, and everyday actions that help keep our community safe.
