In times of emergency, the swift response of police, fire, and rescue personnel can make all the difference. They rely heavily on clear and visible house numbers to locate residences quickly. Ensuring your house number is easily identifiable can be a lifesaver. Here are some crucial guidelines to enhance the visibility of your house numbers:

  1. Visible Location: Your house number should be displayed in a location that is easily seen from the road to which the number is assigned. Ensure there are no obstructions blocking the view.

  2. Mailbox Placement: If you have a mailbox, consider placing numbers on both sides of it. However, this may not suffice under certain conditions:

    • When there is no mailbox.
    • If the mailbox is on the opposite side of the road from your property.
    • In cases where multiple mailboxes exist, and it's not clear which mailbox belongs to your home or building.
  3. House Placement: You may place numbers on your house, but they should be readily visible from the road, typically within 50 feet. Make sure that trees and shrubs do not obstruct the view of the numbers.

  4. Entrance Sign or Post: Consider placing numbers on a sign or post at the entrance to your right-of-way or shared driveway. Here are some specifics:

    • For right-of-ways or shared driveways serving more than one but less than four addresses, erect a post 39" to 40" high.
    • Attach address numbers to each house or unit served by that driveway.
    • If your dwelling or unit is not visible from the point where your driveway branches off, post your address number on your house or on an additional post at that location.
  5. Minimum Height: Your numbers should be at least three (3) inches in height, ensuring they are easily discernible.

  6. Plain Block Numerals: Use plain block numerals for your address. Avoid using script or written numbers, as they can be difficult to read quickly.

  7. Contrasting Background: Numbers should be set against a contrasting background color, preferably white or black. This contrast enhances visibility.

  8. Avoid Utility Poles and Signs: Do not place your numbers on utility poles, county road signs, or within the road right-of-way, except on mailboxes.

  9. Temporary Displays: During construction, maintain a temporary display of your address for new structures until permanent signage is in place.

If you receive mail at a Post Office Box, remember that your mailing address won't change. However, it's still crucial to post your Emergency 911 Address on your property to ensure that it can be quickly located by emergency services. Your cooperation in following these guidelines can make a significant impact on the efficiency and effectiveness of emergency responses.
