Fire & EMS Cadet Program Overview

The Fire & EMS Cadet Program offers high school juniors and seniors an unparalleled opportunity to explore careers in fire and emergency medical services. Designed for students aged 16 and older as of September 1st, the program provides hands-on experience, professional development, and valuable insight into the rewarding field of emergency services.

Key Eligibility Requirements

  • Academic Performance: Participants must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 throughout their involvement in the program.
  • Volunteer Service: Active membership in a volunteer fire department or rescue squad is a mandatory requirement.

Convenient Location & Transportation

Classes are held at the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center, ensuring accessibility for all participants. To further support students, complimentary transportation to and from the center is provided.

How to Apply

Interested students can apply by completing the application form and submitting it via email to volunteer@stmarysmd.com.
Once an application is received, the St. Mary’s County Government Fire & EMS Recruitment Coordinator will contact the applicant to guide them through the next steps.

Ongoing Support and Guidance

The program’s Recruitment Coordinator collaborates with St. Mary’s County Public Schools to verify that each applicant meets the necessary academic requirements. Additionally, the Coordinator provides one-on-one support to assist students in meeting program prerequisites, such as securing membership in a fire department or rescue squad.
