Free Training
You can receive free firefighting, rescue, and EMS training through the Maryland Fire & Rescue Institute. These courses count as college credits through the state of Maryland.

State Tax Break
Receive up to a $5,000 Maryland state tax break for being a volunteer.
Retirement
Through our Length of Service Award Program (LOSAP), you can receive retirement benefits from St. Mary's County after the age of 55.
Live in Program
We offer a Live-In Program that allows you to live at the fire station in exchange for participation and providing service to our communities. Bay District is the busiest fire department in St. Mary’s County that averages over 2000 calls for service a year. Want to see if BDVFD is right for you?
Bay District allows firefighters to ride and sleep in as a “Guest” as long as they are certified. The minimum certification required is Fire fighter 1 (copies of the certification are required) and be a member in good standing of your local fire department. You can bring your own gear or gear will be provided.
