December 13, 2025

On Friday evening, December 12, 2025, at approximately 6:45 p.m., Bay District Volunteer Fire Department’s Station 3, along with surrounding EMS companies, responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian on Great Mills Road near the intersection of Suburban Drive.

Upon arrival, first responders found one individual injured in the roadway. Fire and EMS crews immediately began assessing the patient, who sustained injuries. Due to the nature of those injuries, the patient was prepared for air transport to a regional trauma center.

While personnel were actively working at the scene, the driver of Squad 3 was struck by a passing motorist who failed to stop. The firefighter suffered minor injuries and was evaluated by EMS on scene. Fortunately, the firefighter declined further treatment.

Rescue Engine 92 was dispatched to establish and secure a landing zone at Great Mills High School, where Maryland State Police Aviation Command’s Trooper 7 landed to transport the injured pedestrian to a trauma facility for advanced care.

The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office is currently investigating the hit-and-run incident involving the Squad 3 driver. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact law enforcement.

“This incident is a powerful reminder of the dangers our personnel face while working to protect the community,” said a department spokesperson. “We urge all drivers to slow down and move over when approaching emergency scenes. It’s not just courtesy - it’s the law.”

Fire Safety Reminder:

Slow Down and Move Over – Maryland law requires motorists to move over or slow down when approaching emergency vehicles, tow trucks, and utility or road service vehicles with flashing lights. Protect those who protect you.
