| In the early hours of Thanksgiving morning, Bay District Volunteer Fire Department’s Station 3 and local emergency medical personnel responded to a single-vehicle collision in the area of Point Lookout Road and Janeen Lane.
At approximately 12:11 a.m., 911 dispatchers received reports of a pickup truck that had veered off the roadway and struck a utility pole. Callers reported that live power lines had fallen onto the vehicle and that the driver remained inside.
Upon arrival, law enforcement officers confirmed a pickup truck had crashed into a pole, bringing down live wires that were actively sparking fires along a nearby ditch line. Deputies on the scene removed the adult male driver from the vehicle. Using multiple fire extinguishers, they worked to contain the fire until firefighters and SMECO utility crews could arrive.
Bay District volunteers and EMS personnel took over scene control upon arrival, ensuring the fire was fully extinguished and the area made safe. The driver sustained minor injuries and was transported by EMS to a nearby hospital for further evaluation.
Officials commended the quick actions of responding deputies, firefighters, and utility workers in safely managing a potentially dangerous situation involving live electrical hazards.
The Bay District Volunteer Fire Department reminds all motorists to drive cautiously, especially during nighttime and holiday travel. If you encounter downed power lines, always assume they are live - stay back and call 911 immediately.
