| The first of the month started out hot and humid and it was drill night and going to get hotter. The crews from station 3 and 9 headed down to the Joseph Sacco School for some flammable liquid fire training under the supervision of their lead instructor our President Wayne Johnson and his crew. It had been quite some time since we have had the opportunity to fight some flammable liquid fires and many of our newer members had never had the chance. This was all going to change real soon. After some discussion and safety talk to everyone it was time to feel some heat. The pit fire was set and everyone had the chance to work the nozzle and put out the fire. With a foam operation like we were doing the instructors wanted to show the guys how to properly apply the foam. You have to resist the temptation to aim the nozzle right on the fire and just kind of lob the foam in there. It was some dramatic fires set during the evening and I can tell you from a spectators view it was hot and I don't mean just the weather. I was standing well behind the crew taking pictures and most of the time the heat from the fire was backing me up. So at the end of the night everyone was beat but all enjoyed the chance to work together on the line and get a little training on what they might expect out in the community if we were to have a gasoline tanker truck catch fire. If you don't think it could happen just read firehouse.com and you might change your mind. I tried to take some pictures that would show just how hot the fires got but I don't know if they did it justice. |
