| Police, firefighters, and emergency medical services responded Thursday night to a reported structure fire with possible entrapment in the 20000 block of Sunlight Court in Lexington Park.
The incident was dispatched on July 30, 2026, at approximately 10:12 p.m. after callers reported a two-story residence was possibly on fire and that multiple occupants may still be inside. Emergency communications information indicated smoke alarms could be heard, and initial reports stated that several people were believed to be in or near the home.
Troopers from the Maryland State Police Leonardtown Barrack arrived quickly and confirmed that all nine occupants had safely exited the residence before firefighters made entry.
Firefighters from the Bay District Volunteer Fire Department and Naval Air Station Patuxent River responded and arrived to find smoke showing from the two-story, single-family home. Crews established command, deployed hose lines, and entered the residence to locate the source of the smoke.
Firefighters found a small fire in the kitchen area on the first floor, reported in the area of the microwave, and quickly brought the fire under control. Water was applied to the fire, and crews extinguished it within approximately 10 minutes of arrival.
While the fire was contained to the kitchen area, firefighters conducted primary and secondary searches of the home to ensure no one remained inside. Crews also checked the second floor and basement, secured utilities, and opened portions of walls and surrounding areas to confirm that the fire had not extended beyond the area of origin.
Searches of the residence were negative, and no injuries were reported to occupants or emergency responders.
Additional fire and EMS units were initially dispatched due to the report of a residential structure fire with possible trapped occupants. Once the fire was confirmed extinguished and searches were completed, command held the incident with units from Bay District and NAS Patuxent River while other responding units returned to service.
The incident was brought under control a short time later, and command was terminated after crews completed overhaul and final checks of the residence.
This incident serves as an important reminder to never leave cooking appliances unattended and to make sure working smoke alarms are installed on every level of the home. Residents should also have and practice a home escape plan so everyone knows how to get out quickly and safely during an emergency. |
