Members of the Bay District Volunteer Fire Department (BDVFD) were recognized for their outstanding service and commitment to the community during the recent Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen's Association Annual Convention, held at the Solomons Volunteer Rescue Squad & Fire Department.

BDVFD proudly earned 1st Place, Class V, 1st Place Overall, and the prestigious W. David Gott Memorial Fire Prevention Award, highlighting the department’s exceptional fire prevention efforts throughout 2025.

This recognition reflects the dedication of department members who collectively reached more than 12,800 citizens across 56 community events. These efforts included school visits, public demonstrations, and safety outreach programs designed to educate residents on fire prevention and emergency preparedness. The department also recognized the contributions of Karen Caffery, whose planning efforts and consistent attendance at events played a significant role in the program’s success.

The W. David Gott Memorial Fire Prevention Award is presented annually to an individual who demonstrates exceptional leadership and commitment to fire prevention within their community. This year, BDVFD members Bruce Theden and Kathy Theden were honored with this distinguished award, recognizing their personal dedication and impact in promoting fire safety throughout the region.

“Fire prevention is one of the most important ways we connect with our community,” a department representative shared. “It reminds residents that we are volunteers, and that their support is vital. It also gives us the opportunity to inspire the next generation and introduce young people to the fire service.”

Department leadership emphasized that outreach and prevention efforts are not only critical for reducing emergencies but also play a key role in recruitment and community engagement.

As BDVFD looks ahead to 2026, members remain committed to expanding their outreach efforts and continuing their tradition of service excellence.

Fire Prevention Tip: Make sure your home has working smoke alarms on every level, and test them monthly to ensure they are functioning properly.
