January Is Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month

By Bay District Volunteers
January 1, 2026

Cancer remains the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths among firefighters. Every January, departments across the country recognize Fire Fighter Cancer Awareness Month to honor those we've lost, educate our members, and take action toward prevention.

At Bay District Volunteer Fire Department, we stand committed to the health, safety, and long-term well-being of our personnel. This month serves as a critical reminder that cancer risk reduction starts with awareness, education, and operational discipline.

The Risk Is Real

Firefighters are exposed to a wide range of cancer-causing toxins:

  • Carcinogens released in structure fires, vehicle fires, and overhaul operations

  • Diesel exhaust from apparatus bays

  • Contaminants absorbed through the skin, inhalation, or ingestion

  • Residue from dirty gear, hoods, and gloves

According to the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), firefighters have significantly higher risks for multiple forms of cancer, including mesothelioma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and multiple myeloma.

Take Action: Prevention Through Practice

1. Clean Gear Is Life-Saving Gear

  • Decon on-scene: use wet wipes to remove soot from face, neck, and hands

  • Wash gear according to NFPA 1851 guidelines-after every fire, no exceptions

2. Protect the Station Environment

  • Keep bunker gear out of living quarters

  • Regularly clean apparatus cabs and equipment

3. Personal Accountability

  • Wear SCBA through overhaul

  • Shower within one hour of returning from a fire

  • Know your family history and risk factors

What We're Doing at Bay District VFD

Our department continues to implement and reinforce cancer-prevention policies, including:

  • Regular turnout gear inspection and cleaning cycles

  • On-scene gross decontamination protocols

  • Ongoing health and wellness education

  • Advocacy for department-wide adoption of best practices

We encourage all members to participate in department-led training and to support one another in maintaining a culture of safety and prevention.

Key Reminder:
Cancer prevention is a year-round mission-but this month is the time to double down on vigilance, education, and accountability.

Protect yourself. Protect your crew. Protect your future.
