| Bay District Tower 9 responded to a reported smoke detector activation late Friday morning that was later upgraded after firefighters found smoke inside a multi-level home in the 13600 block of Dowell Road in Solomons.
The incident was reported at approximately 10:53 a.m. on June 5, 2026. Initial dispatch information indicated that smoke alarms were sounding inside a single-family residence while the caller was away from the home. The call was dispatched as a local box alarm for a residential smoke detector activation.
Units from Solomons were first dispatched to the scene and arrived to find a single-family dwelling with nothing evident from the exterior. After further investigation, crews found smoke conditions inside the residence and began working to locate the source.
Firefighters encountered heavy contents and limited access conditions inside the home, which complicated efforts to move through the structure and identify the location of the fire. Crews eventually located fire in the basement and began suppression operations.
Tower 9 responded as the first-arriving truck company. The crew laddered the building, performed searches, assisted with checking for fire extension, and provided fans and lighting to support crews operating inside the home.
Firefighters knocked down the bulk of the basement fire and continued checking for extension into the upper levels of the home. Crews reported low visibility and mild heat on the third floor while ventilation efforts were underway.
A primary search of the residence was completed, and no occupants were found inside. Officials reported the fire originated in the basement. Crews later confirmed there was no fire found on the first, second, or third floors, and no remaining fire in the basement walls.
The Office of the State Fire Marshal was notified and requested to investigate the cause of the fire.
This incident highlights the importance of working smoke alarms, especially when residents are away from home. Smoke alarms provide early notification and can help ensure firefighters are alerted before conditions worsen.
