January 27, 2026

On Monday, January 26, 2026, at approximately 8:40 p.m., firefighters from multiple St. Mary’s County departments responded to a house fire in the 23900 block of McIntosh Road in Leonardtown. The fire, which was initially reported as a furnace fire spreading to nearby walls, was quickly brought under control thanks to the coordinated efforts of responding crews.

According to emergency communications, 911 callers reported visible flames and smoke, with the homeowner attempting to suppress the fire prior to the fire department’s arrival. Chief 7B (Insley) was first on the scene and reported smoke showing from a single-story residence.

Firefighters entered the home with an attack line and located an active fire on the first floor with extension into the attic. Crews from Leonardtown, Hollywood, Bay District Stations 9 and 3, Mechanicsville, and Seventh District worked efficiently to contain the fire and prevent further spread.

All searches of the residence were negative, and all occupants were safely accounted for with no reported injuries.

Personnel from Tower 9 and Engine 32 assisted with ventilation and overhaul operations. The incident was managed under the command of Fire Chief 1 (Trossbach).

This incident serves as an important reminder of the need for regular heating system maintenance, especially during the winter months. Have your furnace professionally inspected and cleaned annually to reduce the risk of fire, and ensure working smoke alarms are installed on every level of your home.
