| Earlier this week in Charles County, the LaPlata Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call in a newly built neighborhood - only to be delayed by multiple obstructions in the roadway. Their fire engine was forced to carefully weave between parked vehicles and large storage containers (PODS) just to reach the scene. In some areas, access was so tight that crews could barely maneuver or establish a water supply.
Let this serve as a critical reminder for residents throughout St. Mary’s County: we can’t help you if we can’t reach you.
"Seconds count in an emergency," said a Bay District VFD spokesperson. "When roadways are blocked by parked cars, dumpsters, or portable storage units, it puts lives at risk - both yours and ours."
Help Us Help You - Keep Roadways Clear:
Park only on one side of the street when possible.
Keep PODS, trailers, and dumpsters out of travel lanes.
Remind guests, movers, and contractors to leave space for emergency vehicles.
Contact your HOA or local officials if access issues persist in your neighborhood.
What happened in LaPlata could easily happen here - and it's 100% preventable. By keeping our roads accessible, you ensure we can respond quickly when every second matters.
Fire Safety Tip: Make sure fire hydrants near your home are clear of obstructions and visible from the street year-round.
