January 3, 2021

On Sunday, January 3, 2021, at approximately 1:35 a.m., Bay District Stations 9 & 3 along with Stations 7 (Hollywood VFD), 13 (NDWFD), 1 (Leonardtown VFD), 2 (Mechanicsville VFD), 6 (Second District VFD&RS), 83 (Solomons VRS&FD), EMS Station 39 (Lexington Park VRS), EMS Station 79 (Hollywood VRS) and EMS Station 19 (Leonardtown VRS) were dispatched to 22966 Hazelnut Lane in California, for the reported house on fire.

Captain 9 (Martoni) and Chief 9B (Harrison) arrived on the scene to find fire showing from a three-story wood-framed single-family house. Chief 9B established the command.

Upon further investigation, firefighters found the rear of the residence fully engulfed in flames, with the fire spreading to the first and second floor as well as the attic and roof. Crews initiated an attack with Fire Chief 3 (Gould) and Chief 7B (Rector) and handing the operations.

Firefighters controlled the fire in approximately one hour, with all units operating on the scene for over three hours.

Two occupants suffered smoke inhalation, however, all four occupants refused medical treatment.

One EMS provider was transported to an area hospital after an injury from a fall.

The four occupants are being assisting by the American Red Cross.

The Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal responded and is investigating the fire.
