By Bay District Volunteers
July 4, 2020

On Saturday, July 4, 2020, at 2:24 p.m., Bay District Stations 9 and 3, along with Hollywood VFD, NDWFD (Naval District Washing, Pax River FD) and EMS stations 38 and 39 were dispatched to 22360 Douglas Court in Great Mills, for the house on fire.

Engine 91 arrived moments after dispatch to find fire showing from the roof, and side “C” (the rear of the home) heavily involved in fire. Fire Chief 3 (R. Wahrenbrock) was responding and requested additional companies to assist due to the excessive heat and humidity.

Upon arrival neighbors reported possible subject was still in the structure, E91 began the initial fire attack while Tower 9 began searching the structure. All searches were negative, and the occupant of the house was found to have safely exited the house prior to arrival.

Firefighters evacuated the home multiple times due to unsafe conditions, firefighters encountered issues when the roof collapsed into the attic and second floor, the stairs going from the first to second floor failing and burning through, and multiple holes throughout the first floor.

Six firefighters were transported from the scene to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital, and two firefighters were treated for burn injuries on the scene.

Additional EMS units and the Rehab Unit from St. Leonard VFDRS was special called to the scene to assist with cooling of the firefighters.

The cause is currently under investigation by the Maryland State Fire Marshall Office.
