We are not all about work all the time........ |

| Just to let anyone out there that is thinking about applying for membership don't think we are all about training all the time and never taking the time to just get together and enjoying one another's company. Ever year about this time we have our annual family picnic and pool party and then just for the active members we have started just taking one of our Monday nights and ordering up bushels of hard crabs along with steamed shrimp and for those who don't like seafood we order about 20 pizzas from our friends over at Poppa John's who give us a price we couldn't refuse. We pull out the apparatus set up plenty of tables and chairs and just sit down and eat crabs and shoot the bull. And you know that firefighters have plenty of bull to shoot. It's the one time that we can all get together and agree on something without much of an argument from anyone. We get our crabs and shrimp from Capt. Joe Scrivener and his boy Mike from over in the valley and boy does he treat us right. They were saying that hard crabs had made a comeback well I here to tell you that is true. These were the fattest crabs I have seen in sometime. Capt. Joe and Mate Mike both firefighters of the Second District VFD and RS are quite the guys and I want to give a big shout out to them for doing it right again for us. We had another reason for the party this year as we have a retirement of one of the most dedicated members we have ever had. Emergency Vehicle Operator Steve Wurtz a.k.a. jack of all trades has finally decided to hang up his wrench and spend some more time with his lovely wife June and the grand kids after 10 years of being our first paid employee. Steve was a member of the department back in the late 60's and early 70's while in the navy stationed at Pax River. He got out of the navy and spent a very rewarding career as a paid firefighter of Prince George's County retiring as a Lieutenant. He came to us after much begging and became our daytime mechanic and anything else we asked him to do. He had no working hours just stayed every day until his work was done. It was nothing for him to start on a job and work on it until late in the night. He was not a 9 to 5 guy and has a great work ethic. We adopted his dog "C-C" as our mascot and we loved her as much as he does. One good thing is that he will continue to be a member of the department and run calls and do whatever he can for us on Monday's and Friday's. We could ask for nothing more than that and wish him the best in his retirement years. I'm sure that there are many a firefighter myself included that owe everything we learned about pumping fire trucks to Steve Wurtz. He is one of a kind and I mean that in a good way. |
