| On April 11, 2026, at approximately 4:52 p.m., units from the Bay District Volunteer Fire Department and mutual aid companies were dispatched to the 22700 block of Laurel Glen Road in California, Maryland, for a reported structure fire. Multiple 911 callers reported smoke and visible flames coming from a multi-story townhome. Initial information indicated that the fire appeared to be located on the exterior porch area, with smoke entering nearby residences and activating smoke alarms. At the time of dispatch, it was unknown if any occupants remained inside. Firefighters arrived within minutes to find a three-story wood-frame apartment building with a small but active fire located beneath a balcony. Crews quickly deployed a fire extinguisher and hose line, establishing command and securing a water supply from a nearby hydrant. Thanks to the rapid actions of responding personnel, the fire was quickly brought under control and extinguished before it could extend into the main living areas of the home. Crews confirmed that there was no fire extension beyond the crawl space, although some smoke had entered the residence. No injuries were reported. Additional units staged nearby while initial crews handled suppression and overhaul. The incident was scaled back shortly after arrival, with command holding only essential units on scene. Property management responded to assist with alarm system reset and building access. A total of approximately 25 personnel initially responded, demonstrating a coordinated and efficient effort to ensure the safety of residents and protect property. Fire officials remind residents that fires can start in exterior areas such as porches, decks, and crawl spaces. Proper disposal of smoking materials, safe use of outdoor electrical equipment, and keeping combustible materials away from structures can help prevent similar incidents. Fire Safety Reminder: Ensure your home’s smoke alarms are working properly and never ignore an alarm activation, even if the source is unclear. |
