| Bay District Stations 3 & 9, along with surrounding mutual aid companies and EMS crews, responded to a reported structure fire in the 21600 block of Great Mills Road late Wednesday morning, preventing the spread of flames beyond a single motel room. At approximately 11:20 a.m., emergency communications received multiple 911 calls reporting black smoke coming from inside a motel room. Within minutes, additional callers confirmed visible flames. Callers advised that a mattress inside the room had caught fire and flames were beginning to spread. Fortunately, the occupant was able to safely exit prior to the arrival of fire crews. No injuries or entrapments were reported. Chief 9B (Tarleton) arrived on scene around 11:25 a.m., established command, and reported smoke showing from the structure. Firefighters quickly located the source of the fire and extinguished it using a portable fire extinguisher. Additional crews advanced hose lines and checked for fire extension into adjacent rooms. Truck and engine companies were strategically positioned to support operations, while crews conducted thorough checks of nearby units to ensure the fire had not spread. Access to surrounding rooms was coordinated with motel maintenance to minimize property damage. At the height of the incident, 29 personnel were operating on scene. Firefighters also requested support from the Fire Marshal’s Office and the local power company to assist with investigation and safety measures. Due to the rapid extinguishment and lack of extension, command began scaling back resources within minutes. The fire was officially placed under control at approximately 12:15 p.m., with no extension to neighboring units. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. This incident highlights the importance of early detection and quick action. Working smoke alarms and prompt reporting can make a critical difference in preventing fire spread and saving lives. Fire Safety Reminder: Never leave smoking materials unattended, and ensure mattresses and bedding are kept clear of potential ignition sources.
