At 10:23 a.m. on February 12, Commercial Box 1-08 was dispatched to the 40000 block of Big Chestnut Road in Leonardtown for a reported structure fire at the Timber America woodmill. Bay District Volunteer Fire Department Stations 3 and 9 were alerted, along with Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department (Station 1) and surrounding mutual aid departments.

Engine 52 arrived on scene to find a large barn, approximately 100 feet by 40 feet, fully involved in fire. Flames had also extended into a nearby 20-by-20-foot area of brush, creating additional challenges for responding crews.

Chief 1A (Bell) arrived shortly after and established command. Recognizing the significant water demands of the incident, command requested a Water Supply Task Force, bringing in additional tankers and an engine to support sustained firefighting operations.

Firefighters deployed multiple handlines to contain the main body of fire while additional crews worked to extinguish the brush fire extension. Due to the size of the structure and the volume of fire, operations were conducted defensively to ensure the safety of personnel.

Water supply operations were established and maintained throughout the incident, even as crews managed shifting conditions on the fireground. Firefighters operated for more than two hours to bring the blaze under control and to complete overhaul operations, ensuring that all remaining hot spots within the structure and its contents were fully extinguished.

No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

“This was a labor-intensive incident that required coordination between multiple companies,” a department official said. “Our crews worked efficiently and safely to contain the fire and prevent further spread within the property.”
