Each honoree represents a unique facet of public service. Some are early in their careers, while others bring decades of experience - but all share a common passion for service and a selfless dedication to the safety and well-being of others.
Honoring President Wayne Johnson
Wayne Johnson, a Life Member and current President of the Bay District Volunteer Fire Department, was recognized for 39 years of distinguished service. Since beginning his fire service journey in 1973, Wayne has held every leadership role in the department, including Fire Chief from 2004 to 2009 and President since 2009.
His tenure has been marked by significant achievements, including the construction of a new Station 3, major renovations at Station 9, and the acquisition of modern fire apparatus that have strengthened emergency response capabilities. Wayne has also been a top responder, earning Firefighter of the Year and multiple commendations for bravery.
Beyond his department, Wayne has contributed to regional and state fire service organizations and served as a senior fire instructor at the Joseph Sacco Fire Fighting and Safety School. His work in training merchant mariners in shipboard firefighting extends his influence well beyond St. Mary’s County.
Firefighting is a family tradition for Wayne - his father served as Bay District’s Chief, his wife Lauren is a Life Member, and his son Ryan is now a third-generation firefighter. Wayne Johnson’s lifelong commitment to fire service and community leadership makes him a true Hometown Hero.
Please join us in celebrating these outstanding individuals for their dedication, sacrifice, and service to others. |
