On Thursday April 2 at approximately 2057 Hours, Station 9 was alerted to a CPR in Progress on Chancellors Run Rd in Great Mills. While Engine 91 was en route with 6 personnel, dispatch advised that units from the St. Mary's County Sheriff’s Office were on scene advising a 26 year old female was unconscious and unresponsive with labored ineffectual breathing. Engine 91 arrived very shortly after and made entry into the house to assess the patient. Members of the sheriff’s office were already there applying an AED to the patient. Crew from Engine 91 immediately took over care and began to examine the patient and prepare life saving interventions. The patient was found to be unresponsive to stimuli and exhibiting symptoms of possible cardiac arrest, a nasopharyngeal airway was established and CPR was started. At this time Chief 9B assumed the incident command and began setting things in motion for a medivac by Trooper 7.

The on scene EMTs began to further asses the patient and discovered she may have been suffering from an overdose of narcotics. Naloxone was administered via a nasal atomizer and within 2 minutes the patient had regained consciousness and showed signs of improvement. The patient was packaged and loaded into the waiting ambulance where she was taken to Regional Park on Chancellors Run Rd for the landing site. Engine 91 responded as well for the LZ and for manpower assistance. Trooper 7 landed, loaded the patient, and took off without incident to Southern Maryland Hospital Center.

The Bay District Volunteer Fire Department would like to say "Thank You" to our mutual aid companies; Lexington Park Volunteer Rescue Squad, St. Mary's County Advanced Life Support Unit, St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office, and Maryland State Police Aviation Command. Public Safety is a team effort and without everyone working together like a well oiled machine, it just doesn't work at all. Remember folks when you see or hear an emergency vehicle to pull to the right.
