Practice Makes Perfect....... And That"s What We Strive To Be...........

By Public Information Officer Douglas Medley
March 7, 2010

The day dawned bright and beautiful on Sunday, March 7, 2010 and what better way to spend it than with your fellow firefighters in an extrication class for all new members who have had no experience using the tools off the rescue squad along with any new recruits just brought in at the last business meeting of the department.

The drill was under the watchful eye of Captain Robert Wahrenbrock and he put everyone thru their paces. You can bet that when they finish a class that Rob has taught you will know the safe and proper way to use everything that we carry on the rescue. After everyone got their chance to use the different tools before they were finished for the day they lit the cars on fire to practice the use of hand lines on a working vehicle fire.

Oh, did I say that this was being conducted on a Sunday when most people are home with their families while our people are out enhancing their operational skills so that when called to response on a motor vehicle accident our firefighters are prepared to handle any circumstances that they find when they arrive on the scene.

If you happen to come upon an accident and are not helping just stand back and watch when these guys and gals arrive on the scene and perform like a well rehearsed ballet. Each firefighter has a job and knows how to do it or they wouldn't be riding the equipment. Some new members can't take the training and for them we say thanks for trying. It's just not sign up on the dotted line, get your turn out gear and jump on. There are many, many hours of tough training before you are allowed to ride on our apparatus as it is in any of the departments in St. Mary's County.

So if you feel that you are up to the challenge stop by either of our stations and pick up an application.
