Spring Is In The Air So Let's Get Those Cobwebs Out Of The Hosebeds.....

By Public Information Officer Douglas Medley
March 1, 2010

Spring was in the air when the firefighters from stations 3 and 9 mounted up on their apparatus to get the Monday night drill season off to a good start. Everyone met up in the rear of the Giant food store off Worth Avenue to discuss the plans for drill. We gather often here because there is plenty of room, plenty of hydrants, plenty of buildings and must not forget the bugs and frogs in the run off pond who were there to serenade us and remind us that spring had indeed sprung. Don't you just love that sound after the long hard winter that we have been having. We know its about time to put away the snow shovels and get out the lawn mowers.

Back to the drill. Deputy Chief 9B (Downs) was in charge of the drill and he decided to not only have a hose practice but at the same time allow our members and drivers the opportunity to check out the new military housing development behind the shopping center. There are about 80 new two story single family homes here with garages located in the rear of each house. Very nice homes and all were occupied by military families. We got to meet many of them when they came out of their houses to see just what all the fire trucks were doing in their neighborhood. We went over to each person that came out and explained to them just what we were doing and they were all impressed that we as volunteers would take our time to come to their neighborhood and make sure we had a good understanding of just how the streets were layed out, where the fire hydrants were located and could we in fact drive our big fire trucks to the rear of the houses.

Well the Deputy Chief (Downs) along with Safety Officer 9 (Bixby) and Lieut. 9 (Warren) had it set up so that the first arriving engine would have a fire in the rear of the house and the next in engine would do a split lay, for you like me that don't understand much of this fire talk that is when one fire truck lays hose at the entrance to the house on fire and the next fire truck lays from the entrance to the fire hydrant, This requires skill for both the firefighters and the drivers and it allows each of the crews to determine just where the fire hydrants are located in the development. Trust me on this one gang if you don't know where the hydrant is located you are going to look real stupid not knowing which direction to go from the scene of the fire.

If was a nice drill to get us warmed up for the up comiing drill season and nice to talk to some of the people out there that we do our best to serve and protect. Kinda sounds like cop stuff doesn't it but firefighters do that to so guess we can both say it.

Now after everyone got their turn at laying out we went back to the rear of the shopping center to go over just what we did and how could we do it better. As usual there were our associates with hot drinks, sandwichs and tatar chips. Them sandwichs were good but you gotta watch them darn tooth picks stuck in them. They are hard to get down and harder to digest if you know what I mean.

In closing this story let me apologize for the crappy quality of my pictures. I was not using my good camera. Besides I don't have one of those 5 foot long lenses like Smug Mug (John Douglas) does but I will try to do better.
