The War Wagon Heads South For Her Second Life...............
By Public Information Officer Douglas Medley
May 30, 2009
On May 30, 2009 (Saturday) another legend left Station 3 for greener pastures down south. It was listed on the books as Reserve Engine 34 but the guys will remember it as "Engine 32 - The War Wagon". She was a 1986 American LaFrance 1250 GPM pumper with a 1,000 gallon water tank. She was a great ride and very well taken care of by the members of the department. She was still running first due until about a year ago when we bought the new engine. The old girl has seen plenty of action in her 24 years of faithful service to our department and she is heading south to join another close friend of hers our old truck 3 who was sold to a fire company that runs first due with this department that bought old engine 32. Is that not quite the unusual story or what.
The members of the Homeland Park Volunteer Fire Department are now the proud owners of this fine piece and a finer bunch of guys you would ever meet. They are the most down to earth guys and they can just walk up to you and start a conversation like they have know you all your life. You just got to love that southern lifestyle. After spending Friday night in the big city they got up early to go over the engine with our Keith Fairfax and Bob Braddock. They brought along one of their old time members and past chief to look her over and he was impressed. What a guy he was. Just loved to talk.
After going over the engine with Keith and swapping patches and t-shirts with us they pulled out of the parking lot with the old timer driving with a big smile on his face. We wish them all the best and know that she will be able to provide them and their community plenty of service in the years to come as she so faithfully gave St. Mary's County.
Units:
Engine 32 (The War Wagon)
Engine 32 (The War Wagon) ready to make the long trip to the state of South Carolina. She looks ready to take in a run right now.
Keith Fairfax on one end and Bob Braddock on the other with the guys from Homeland Park VFD. That guy next to Bob was so cool and the rest of them were a great bunch of guys. Hope they come back up one day and run a few with us.
Past Chief of Homeland Park VFD giving us a thumbs up as they head out.
There she goes. We even gave them hose and nozzles plus a lot of other stuff for their department.
This fine group showed up Saturday to give a fond farewell to the old girl. They even dressed up for the occasion. Ain't they pretty....
Even all the assoicates were there to provide re-hab and tissues for us old guys who were crying.
