Fatal MVA w/Entrapment, fire, and HazMat spill

On 3/10/2006 at 1909 hours Station 3 Volunteers were alerted to a MVA with multiple vehicles involved at the intersection of Great Mills Road and Westbury Blvd. Within 30 seconds from dispatch Engine 32(Lt. Carroll), Squad 3 (CH3A Smiley) and Fire Chief 3 responded with 11 Volunteers. Chief 3 arrived to find two vehicles in the intersection with 2 trapped in one vehicle, the other vehicle on fire and about 50 gallons of fuel in the roadway. Engine 32 arrived next and pulled a 1 3/4 line to extinguish the fire and to lay a blanket of foam for the fuel on the roadway. Squad 3 arrived and went to work on the subjects trapped, the squad crew removed the doors and roof to remove the patients from the vehicle. Engine 33 (CH9B Jones) arrived next and provided Engine 32 water supply and also pulled a 1 3/4 line for more blanket on the fuel. Engine 132, HazMat 13, HazMat 18 were special called to assist with the large amount fuel and for the injured persons. Engine 63 was called to handle the landing zone for Trooper 7, and Eagle 1 at the Great Mills High School parking lot. State highway was called for the traffic control and for sand to clean up the roadway. Squad 3 was held for about 4 hours for lighting for the investigation and for the clean up of the roadway. A total of 7 people were transported either to SMH or to Trauma Centers. Chief 3 had the Great Mills Rd. command, Chief 9B had operations and Chief 3A had the Extrication sector. At the time of this story we were informed that one of the patients flown did succumbed to his injuries, The Bay District Volunteers would like to send our condolences to the family of that patient. All units cleared the call at 2335 hours.
