Bay District Participates in Brew & BBQ Competition
By Fire Sergeant Steven Vanness
August 19, 2015
On August 2nd, 2015 members from station 3 participated in the "Firefighter Skills Challenge" event at the Brew & BBQ. Company 3 put together 3 crews consisting of 2 people each. The event timed you on donning your PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), crawling through a confined space tube, advancing a handline, forcible entry, and removing a Rescue Randy dummy from a window. Company 3 was the only company in attendance and therefore took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes totaling $1500. The funds were rewarded to the department.
After receiving the prizes, the participating members came to an agreement that they would use the funds on (4) "Firecam" helmet cameras and (4) "Go Pro Hero" cameras. These cameras allow the members to record incidents both pre arrival and after you have arrived. These cameras give a 1st person view of things and allow you to critique after an incident and make yourself and department better.
A special thanks to smnewsnet.com for their continued support in the community and rewarding our department with these items.
Participating Crews:
Team 1 Fire Sergeant Steven Vanness Fire Sergeant Kyle Hayden
Team 2 Fire Captain Daniel Burroughs Firefighter Zak Werkheiser
Team 3 Firefighter Jt Tippett Firefighter Nick Alioto
Members equipped their helmets with the cameras and the go pros just above that.
