It's Back To Doing What We Do Best

June 2, 2014 it was drill night for the volunteers from station 3 and 9. Chief 3A (Gould) felt that it was a good time to go out and practice the fundamentals of what we do. Now you can have special drills and that’s a good thing but there are times that you just have to get back to basics and in our line of work that’s laying hose, pulling lines and throwing ladders.
Now 3A (Gould) picked a nice location at the Carver Elementary School off Route 246 away from any distractions. Crews from both stations mounted up around 1730 hrs. So they could be there right at 1800 hrs. And most were on time.
Joe got everyone around while he discussed what he expected of them and when he talks everyone listens. We were going to do our usual layout for a house fire. Now we have a lot of new people and after the long cold winter it was a beautiful evening to flow some water. Even the fact that our new people go through the recruit class before being allowed to ride it nice to see them put what they have learned to use. It also doesn’t hurt for our older members to get back in the groove so to speak.
After each crew had the chance to layout and pull hand lines they were rotated to the truck company to practice throwing some ladders and I mean they threw some ladders to the building. Now they drilled from 1800 hrs. to 2100 hrs. When the sun was going down. When they were finished no one was complaining about being done for the night and I’m sure that they all look forward to whatever the officers of the department have for them next drill night. The classroom drill is over till there is frost on the ground so when they show up on Monday night they know it’s going to be time for some work. I think that is what a drill night should be. Practice makes perfect as they say.
Now as I close I want to thank Associate Jamie Olson for taking pictures for me. I turned her lose with my camera and when I checked it she had taken 232 pictures. Don’t worry I won’t put them all on here this time.
