Fire Chief Shawn Downs in Serious Accident
By Public Information Officer Douglas Medley
June 3, 2013
On June 1, 2013 our Fire Chief Shawn Downs was involved in a serious accident while coming home from his job as a Lieutenant with the District of Columbia Fire Department. It was at shift change and this is the best information that I have at this time. He was coming across a bridge when several vehicles encountered something oily on the roadway that caused them to all lose control. Shawn was on his motorcycle at the time of the accident and hit a Jersey wall and was thrown from the motorcycle to the hard pavement of the city street. Thank God that he had his helmet on as I'm sure that prevented receiving any serious head injury.
As of tonight this is what I know from our Deputy Chief Stockwell who talked with the family. They have gotten him up a little bit and he is on elephant meds (heavy duty pain killers) along with finding that he also has a broken wrist to go along with the broken ribs, fractured pelvis and plenty of road rash.
The people at the hospital are hoping to get him home tomorrow but we ask that everyone resist the temptation to rush up to visit with him. There will be plenty of time for that later on as I'm no doctor but I think he will have a long road to recovery. That's when he will need all our love and support.
Please keep Shawn, Jen and the rest of the family in your thoughts and prayers. We are so fortunate that God spared our Fire Chief and now it's up to us to assist him on his road to recovery.
